What Is a Health Information Technician?

Health information technicians use software and apps to organize, analyze, and manage patient data, including exam records, test results, medical histories, treatment plans, and other electronic health records (EHRs).

Medical records personnel, commonly known as health information technicians, organize and manage health information data by ensuring its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in paper files and electronic systems.

At ATA College, you’ll learn the various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and to maintain patients’ medical and treatment histories in as little as 8 months.

Health Information Technician Work At:

Health information technicians work in medical offices, medical clinics, acute care and long-term medical facilities, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and outpatient clinics.

Health Information Technician, Associate of Applied Science

After completing the 8-month diploma training program at our El Cajon, San Diego Health Information & Medical Records Technician School, ATA College students can continue in the Health Information Technician (HIT) Associate of Applied Science program.

The associate degree can be completed in an additional 6 months and contains general education courses and advanced courses in billing and coding.

ATA College has an Educational Alliance with Grand Canyon University for students successfully completing this associate degree program. ATA College Graduates are able eligible to transfer their credits and receive a 10% off Scholarship towards GCU tuition.
